app trail day 12

Day 12                   9/23/10
North Creek Campground --> North Creek Campground
Crazy-it's almost October-my favorite month. Time goes by way too fast. To think, I havent seen some people from college in 2.5 years insane and it'll only go by faster because every year 1 year becomes a smaller percentage piece of the pie of life. When you were 5, being told to wait until next year was forever becuase you had only been alive 5 years and 1 year is 1/5 of that time, now its 1/24 of life.
Anyways, last night while I was about to go to sleep, we heard a lion-like growl. I usually think the worst, but time I confidently declared that it must have been the fire smoldering. But then we heard it again. Seth looked out and saw 2 pairs of eyes but couldn't make out what they were. They were fighting over a rinsed out mashed potato bowl we'd placed far enough away from us sinse we'd ran out of water. Seth looked at me and said, "Bobcats." Seth went outside with me to asess the situation and because I had to pee and brush my teeth-all clear. Then as I was trying to fall asleep, Seth heard them again. Anticlimactically enough, they were not bobcats but house cats...kittens...baby kittens, and made off with our sponge. I had pretty good sleep and woke up at 7 something and forced myself back to sleep despite hearing crows. You hear all kinds of things out here like trees falling, wild turkeys, etc. In the last 2 hours of sleep, I had a very realistic dream that 2 of my friends died (which means that they're going to live long lives according to my mother) then they ended up not being dead and a friend who had passed was alive again. I was told that if I wanted, that could be my reality. My drewams are never normal. There was a lot more to it than that, but i won't bore you because as Bill Mahar put in his book, New Rules, "People hate hearing about your dreams, unless they're in them."
Got up, got water and ate oatmeal. My pack's top served as a rather large fanny pack that i then Seth donned. I looked pregers and Seth looked as if he was in his 4th trimester. It was nice hiking without a pack abd poles although White Tail Trail (2.7 miles) was a little dull and Seth was annoyed at running into Charlotte's 10,000 spider webs although none said, "humble."  The trail was badly maintained too. I was wearing shorts and running into all kinds of foliage. And worse,  I don't know what poison oak, ivy, sumac, etc. looks like. We did find a pretty feather which ended up being of the exotic species, turkey. Apparently eagle feathers are illeglal to have unless you're native American. Eagle feather and a couple of casinos eh?  We came back, collected firewood, and asked the "hosts" for sugar for our kool-aid, Helga informed us that the bugs we kept seeing were stinkbugs-bugs that I've heard of but never had the pleasure of smelling. Last night, we learned that the 2nd to last day of our trip, we'd be near Blacksburg. I instantly thought of a friend that went to Tech and we made arrangemnts with her to come scoop us so we could all hang out.
we read some and had velveeta and seth and I tried to take a nap. He slept for 2 hours and me 10 minutes.
Corey's coming in about 6 hours at midnight. For logistical reasons, we have to leave at 4 or 5 in the am to start the hike. We'll be hiking McAffes Knob, the most photographed peak in all the A.T! His coming has been a sort of excitement for us. A glimmer in the near future that means resupplies, Jack Daniels, Sunny D and ho-hos.  A little bit like Quetzalcoatl to the Aztecs as Corey is white, although hardly a god arriving at perfect timing. Hopefully he doesnt pillage the campground, rape Seth and make me compelled to give him my monetary treasures.Corey looks more like those half men half goat people.

P.S. Today felt like a lazy day in "el campo." :)
